On September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro I was traveling from Santos to São Paulo when he received orders from Lisbon demanding his return. By the Ipiranga Brook he refused the orders and declared independence, formalizing Brazil's separation from Portugal. Uniquely in the Americas, Brazil kept a monarchy for decades and avoided a protracted war of independence.
