Our Lady of Aparecida Description

Celebrates Brazil's patron saint on October 12th, also observed as Children's Day. Thousands of pilgrims travel to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in São Paulo state — one of the world's largest Marian shrines — for masses and processions. The small clay statue of the Virgin Mary, found by fishermen in 1717, is venerated as a symbol of national faith and protection across this deeply Catholic country.

📜 History & Origins

In October 1717 three fishermen on the Paraíba River hauled up a headless clay statue of the Virgin Mary, then its body, after which their nets filled with fish. Devotion spread across Brazil, a grand shrine grew around the statue, and in 1930 Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady Aparecida the principal patroness of the nation.

🎉 How It's Celebrated

Pilgrims travel long distances to the Basilica, many walking the final stretch on their knees while carrying candles and photographs of loved ones. Masses fill the vast sanctuary throughout the day. Because Children's Day also falls on October 12, families combine faith visits with gifts and outings, and toy stores record some of their highest sales of the year.

🍽️ Traditional Foods

Devotional meals of fish honor the fishing origin of the statue and are shared at pilgrim gatherings. Traditional sweets and cakes appear at family tables. On Children's Day, hot dogs, pizza, and birthday-style cakes are common, and children receive candy and small gifts.
