Tiradentes was a dentist, miner, and military officer who joined the Inconfidência Mineira in 1789, a failed republican uprising against Portuguese taxation and colonial rule. Betrayed and tried, he was hanged and quartered in Rio de Janeiro in 1792. His image was elevated to a civic and republican martyr after the empire fell in 1889.
