Boxing Day Description
Observed on December 26th, originating as a day when the wealthy distributed Christmas boxes to servants and the poor. In modern Canada, it is synonymous with massive retail sales, with shoppers lining up before dawn for deep discounts at major stores. It provides an additional day for extended family gatherings and hockey tournaments. In some provinces Boxing Day is not a statutory holiday, but in Ontario and federally regulated workplaces it is observed.
