📜 History & Origins
The Dragon Boat Festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister of the Chu state during the Warring States period (475-221 BCE). When Chu's capital fell, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. Locals raced out in boats and threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from eating his body — the origin of dragon boat racing and zongzi.
🎉 How It's Celebrated
Dragon boat races dominate the day, with elaborately carved boats racing to thunderous drumbeats on rivers and lakes across southern China. Families hang calamus and mugwort (ai cao) above doors to repel insects and evil spirits. Children wear colorful silk-thread bracelets and fragrant sachets (xiangbao) filled with medicinal herbs. Egg-balancing contests at noon — said to be the only time eggs can stand upright — are popular folk games.
🍽️ Traditional Foods
Zongzi — glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves with fillings like pork belly, salted duck egg yolk, red bean paste, or chestnuts — is the indispensable Dragon Boat food. Northern China favors sweet zongzi with dates, while the south prefers savory versions.
