Labour Day Description
Labour Day (Tag der Arbeit, also known as Maifeiertag) on May 1st is a nationwide public holiday in all 16 German federal states. It honors workers and the labor movement, with roots in the international fight for the eight-hour workday. Trade unions organize rallies, marches, and public demonstrations in major cities — the largest events take place in Berlin, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. These are largely peaceful, though some cities, particularly Berlin's Kreuzberg district, have a history of May Day protests that can result in street closures. May 1st also coincides with traditional German spring celebrations, including the raising of the Maypole (Maibaum) in villages across Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, accompanied by folk dancing and festival tents. Tanz in den Mai (dance into May) parties are held the night before. Government offices, banks, schools, and most businesses are closed. Public transport runs on Sunday/holiday schedules, with possible route diversions around major demonstration areas.
