Whit Sunday Description
Whit Sunday (Pfingstsonntag) on May 24, 2026 commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, as described in the New Testament, and is considered the birthday of the Christian Church. As it falls on a Sunday, it is not a separate additional public holiday in Germany. It is, however, an important religious observance — church services are central to the day, often including confirmations in Protestant churches and special masses in Catholic parishes. In rural areas, traditional Pfingst processions with decorated horses (Pfingstritt) take place in regions like Bavaria and Lower Saxony. For most Germans, it is part of the Pfingsten long weekend (Saturday through Whit Monday), and many use it for short trips, garden work, or outdoor recreation. Retail shops are closed as per Sunday trading laws. Restaurants, beer gardens, and cafes in popular destinations are typically open and busy. The night before, some communities hold Pfingstfeuer (Whit fires) as a regional tradition.
