Ascension Day Description
Ascension Day commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven forty days after Easter and always falls on a Thursday. It is a public holiday in Denmark with banks, government offices, and most businesses closed. Church services are held nationwide, though attendance is moderate. Many Danes use the day to extend the weekend — the Friday after Ascension is a popular "bankedag" (bridge day), creating a four-day weekend. Families often take short trips to summer houses or neighboring countries like Sweden and Germany. The holiday coincides with blooming spring, and outdoor activities like cycling and picnics are typical.
