Constitution Day Description
Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) commemorates the signing of Denmark's first democratic constitution on June 5, 1849, transitioning the country to a constitutional monarchy. It is also Father's Day in Denmark. Political rallies and speeches by party leaders are held in parks and public squares, with the largest gathering in Copenhagen's Fælledparken. The day is a half-holiday — shops may close early, and banks close, but it is not a full mandatory day off for everyone. Many Danes celebrate with flag-raising, picnics, and community events. The constitution's principles of democracy and civil rights are honored in school programs.
