Great Prayer Day Description
Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag) was a uniquely Danish holiday combining several minor penitential days into one major observance, established in 1686 by Bishop Hans Bagger. Traditionally marked by church prayers, fasting, and the eating of warm "hveder" (wheat buns) the previous evening, this centuries-old tradition was abolished as a public holiday from 2024 onward. Its calendar date in 2026 may appear in some schedules but is no longer a national day off. The holiday's discontinuation sparked widespread public debate and remains a notable chapter in Denmark's evolving holiday landscape.
