New Year's Day Description
New Year's Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar. Danes celebrate New Year's Eve with the Queen's televised New Year speech at 6 PM, elaborate multi-course dinners, and one of Europe's most intense private firework displays — a tradition dating to the 19th century. On the day itself, all shops, banks, and government offices close by law under "lukkeloven." Many Danes gather for "nytårskur" (New Year's reception) at workplaces or with friends. The traditional meal is "torsk" (cod) with mustard sauce, and rest after the previous night's festivities is the priority.
