Whit Sunday Description
Whit Sunday (Pentecost) celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, fifty days after Easter. As it falls on a Sunday, it has limited commercial impact but is a designated public holiday. Church services include the traditional "pinsesalmer" (Pentecost hymns) and often confirmation ceremonies. Danish families gather for "pinsefrokost" — a lunch similar to Christmas and Easter traditions featuring herring, meats, cheese, and schnapps. Many Danes use the long weekend for nature excursions, as May is one of the most beautiful months for the Danish countryside with beech forests in full leaf and rapeseed fields in yellow bloom.
