Assumption of the Virgin Description

The Assumption of the Virgin Mary celebrates the Catholic dogma that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. It is one of Spain's most deeply rooted religious feasts, with major pilgrimages and festivals in towns such as Elche, where the "Misteri d'Elx" sacred drama is performed. Most businesses and public offices close. Coastal towns see some shops remain open to serve tourists, though inland regions observe a near-total shutdown.
