Epiphany of the Lord Description

Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus. It is arguably more important than Christmas Day for Spanish children, as this is when gifts are traditionally exchanged. The evening before features spectacular "Cabalgata de Reyes" parades in every city and village, with the Three Kings distributing sweets from elaborate floats. Public offices, banks, and most shops close nationwide.

📜 History & Origins

Epiphany (Día de Reyes) celebrates the biblical arrival of the Magi — Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar — bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the newborn Jesus. The feast was established in the Western Church by the 4th century and reached Spain through Visigothic and later Catholic tradition. In Spain it long eclipsed Santa Claus (Papá Noel) as the main gift-giving occasion, a hierarchy that persists today despite growing Christmas Day commercialism.

🎉 How It's Celebrated

On the night of January 5, every city and town stages a Cabalgata de Reyes — a grand parade where the Three Kings ride elaborate floats through the streets, tossing handfuls of sweets to children. Children leave their polished shoes out overnight, sometimes with water for the kings' camels, and wake on January 6 to find gifts beside them. A Roscón de Reyes cake is shared, and whoever finds the hidden bean traditionally pays for the cake.

🍽️ Traditional Foods

Roscón de Reyes — a ring-shaped brioche-style sweet bread decorated with candied fruit and dusted with sugar — is the signature treat. A small porcelain figurine (of the baby Jesus or a king) and a dried bean are baked inside; the figurine's finder is crowned king of the party, while the bean's finder must buy next year's cake. Hot chocolate often accompanies it.
