New Year's Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar. Most businesses, banks, and public offices remain closed. Spaniards traditionally eat twelve grapes at midnight at Puerta del Sol in Madrid or in town squares nationwide, one for each chime of the clock, to bring luck for each month of the coming year.
