Ascension Day Description
Ascension Day (Helatorstai) commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven forty days after Easter and always falls on a Thursday. It is a public holiday in Finland with banks, government offices, and most businesses closed. Church services are held in Lutheran and Orthodox parishes, though attendance is lower than at Easter. Many Finns use the day to create a long weekend by taking the Friday off, often heading to summer cottages for the first time in the season. Spring is in full bloom across southern and central Finland, making outdoor activities and gardening popular choices. Retail hours in cities may be reduced.
