Christmas Day Description
Christmas Day celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. In Finland, Christmas Eve ("Jouluaatto") is the primary celebration: families gather for a festive dinner featuring ham, root vegetable casseroles, gravlax, and "joulutorttu" (Christmas star pastries). The highlight is a visit from "Joulupukki" (Christmas Goat / Santa Claus) who personally delivers gifts. Christmas Day itself is devoted to church services, particularly the early morning "Joulukirkko" (Christmas Church), and quiet family time. Cemeteries are visited and candles lit on graves of loved ones — a breathtaking sight in the snowy darkness. All businesses, banks, and offices close. The Finnish Christmas radiates candlelit tranquility.
