Good Friday Description
Good Friday (Pitkäperjantai) is a solemn public holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In Finland, it is one of the quietest days of the year — historically, all public entertainment was prohibited, and even today, bars and many restaurants remain closed by custom. Church services focus on the Passion narrative, and the day is spent in quiet reflection. Public offices, banks, and virtually all businesses close. Finnish families often attend church and gather for a simple meal, traditionally meatless. The mood is markedly subdued compared to Easter Sunday, and the long Easter weekend begins with this most contemplative of Finnish holidays.
