Independence Day Description
Independence Day celebrates Finland's declaration of independence from Russia on December 6, 1917. It is a solemn and dignified national holiday contrasting with the exuberance of Vappu. The President's Independence Day Reception ("Linnan Juhlat") at the Presidential Palace is televised nationwide, watched by millions as invited guests including veterans, politicians, artists, and citizens who have contributed to society are presented. At 6 PM, Finns light two blue-and-white candles in their windows — a tradition dating to the 19th century. War memorials are visited, and wreaths laid. All offices, banks, and businesses close. The day embodies Finnish resilience and national unity.
