Midsummer Day Description
Midsummer Day (Juhannuspäivä) is one of Finland's most beloved holidays, celebrating the summer solstice and the height of the midnight sun period. The main celebration occurs on Midsummer Eve (Friday), when Finns retreat to summer cottages to light large bonfires ("juhannuskokko"), enjoy sauna, swim in lakes, and feast on new potatoes, grilled fish, and strawberries. In coastal areas, bonfires light up the archipelago. The actual Midsummer Day (Saturday) is calmer — spent recovering, boating, or relaxing lakeside. All public offices and banks close. Cities empty dramatically as Finns embrace their profound connection to nature, water, and the brief Nordic summer.
