📜 History & Origins

All Saints' Day (La Toussaint) honors all saints, known and unknown. Its origins date to the 7th century, when Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon in Rome to the Virgin and all martyrs. Pope Gregory III later moved the feast to 1 November in the 8th century. By the Middle Ages the day had also become a time to pray for the dead, and in France it became customary to visit cemeteries on or around 1 November — a practice reinforced after World War I, when so many families mourned soldiers with no known grave.
