Dormition of the Theotokos Description
Called Dekapentavgoustos, this is the most important summer religious holiday in Greece, celebrating the Dormition (falling asleep) and Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is preceded by a two-week fasting period. Thousands of pilgrims travel to churches and monasteries dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary), most famously to the Church of Panagia Evangelistria on Tinos, where the miraculous icon draws massive crowds. On islands like Paros and in villages throughout Greece, grand panigiria feature traditional music, dancing, and feasting. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close for this deeply cherished celebration.
