Labour Day Description
International Workers' Day, widely observed across Greece as a day honoring labor rights and the struggles of the working class. Major labor unions and left-wing political parties organize large rallies and marches, particularly in Athens' Syntagma Square and central Thessaloniki. Strikes affecting public transportation are common. A popular tradition is the gathering of wildflowers to make a May wreath (protomayiatiko stefani) hung on front doors. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. If Easter coincides with May Day, the holiday is typically moved to the following Tuesday to accommodate both celebrations.
