Synaxis of the Mother of God Description
Known as the Second Day of Christmas, this Orthodox feast honors the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) on the day after Christ's Nativity, giving thanks to the one who bore the Savior. It is also the feast day of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr. In Greece, it is a continuation of Christmas celebrations with extended family gatherings, more feasting, and relaxation. Churches hold a Divine Liturgy focused on the role of the Virgin Mary in salvation history. Government offices, banks, and most businesses remain closed, giving families a second full day of holiday rest before the return to daily routines.
