Eid al-Fitr Description
Called Hari Raya Idul Fitri or Lebaran, marking the end of Ramadan. It is Indonesia's most significant holiday, triggering the world's largest annual temporary migration (mudik) as tens of millions travel from cities to their hometowns. The morning features special prayers at mosques and open fields, followed by a tradition of sungkem — younger family members bowing to elders and asking for forgiveness. Neighborhoods fill with the sounds of takbiran (night prayers) and the distribution of ketupat (rice cakes) and opor ayam (chicken curry). Government offices, banks, and almost all businesses close. The celebration officially spans two days but festivities often extend for a week.
