Independence Day Description
Celebrating the proclamation of Indonesian independence by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta on August 17, 1945. The main event is the flag-hoisting ceremony at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, televised nationally and attended by the President, cabinet ministers, and honored guests. Across every village, town, and city, similar ceremonies are conducted at government offices and schools. Neighborhoods hold lomba (traditional games) including panjat pinang (greased pole climbing) and sack races. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In the weeks leading up to the day, red-and-white flags and decorations adorn every street and building.
