Mawlid al-Nabi Description
Celebrating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In Indonesia, the observance is marked by religious gatherings, recitations of sholawat (praises upon the Prophet), and public lectures (pengajian) at mosques and community halls. In Java, the Sekaten festival in Yogyakarta and Surakarta features traditional gamelan performances at the grand mosques, continuing a centuries-old blend of Islamic and Javanese traditions. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In Aceh and other strongly Islamic regions, large processions and extended religious observances take place, while nationwide the day fosters communal spiritual reflection.
