Nyepi - Day of Silence Description
The Balinese Hindu New Year observed as a complete day of silence, meditation, and self-reflection across the island of Bali. From 6 AM to 6 AM the following day, the entire island shuts down: Ngurah Rai Airport closes, all ports halt operations, roads are empty, lights are kept off, and even tourists must remain inside their hotels. The night before, massive ogoh-ogoh (demon effigies) are paraded through streets and burned to purify the island. No work, travel, or entertainment is permitted. It is a uniquely profound cultural and spiritual observance with no parallel elsewhere in the world.
