Shmini Atzeret Description
The Eighth Day of Assembly, concluding the Sukkot festival as a separate but connected holiday. In Israel, Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are celebrated on the same day (in the diaspora they are two separate days). Synagogues hold services with the Tefillat Geshem (Prayer for Rain), marking the beginning of the rainy season in the Land of Israel. Torah scrolls are taken out in joyful hakafot (processional circles) with singing and dancing as the annual Torah reading cycle is completed and restarted. Government offices, banks, schools, and most businesses close. The day carries a mix of solemn liturgical importance and exuberant celebration.
