Yom HaAtzmaut Description
Israel's Independence Day, celebrating the declaration of the State of Israel by David Ben-Gurion on May 14, 1948 (5 Iyar 5708 on the Hebrew calendar). The preceding evening transitions from the somber Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) to joyful celebration: the state torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem begins the festivities. Streets and parks fill with outdoor parties, concerts, and fireworks displays. People spray each other with silly string and foam, and Israeli flags are everywhere. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Families gather for traditional barbecues (mangal) in every park and open space across the country — the aroma of grilled meat defines the day's atmosphere.
