Observed on August 15th with ancient Roman roots as Feriae Augusti, coinciding with the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary. Ferragosto dates to 18 BCE, when Emperor Augustus established the Feriae Augusti (holidays of Augustus) as a period of rest following the exhausting agricultural labour of late summer, consolidating several earlier festivals throughout August. The Catholic Church later overlaid the date with the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Mary's bodily ascent into heaven — which was defined as dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950 but celebrated liturgically since at least the 6th century. Under Fascism in the 1920s–30s, the regime organized popular 'Ferragosto trains' offering discounted trips to the sea and mountains, shaping the modern tradition of the August holiday exodus.

Ferragosto triggers the great summer migration: cities such as Rome, Milan, and Florence empty as Italians stream to coastal resorts, mountain villages, and lakes. Siena holds its second Palio, the Palio dell'Assunta, a bareback horse race around the Piazza del Campo. Smaller towns stage religious processions, concerts, and midnight fireworks over the sea, while families traditionally organise picnics on August 15 itself.

The classic Ferragosto meal varies by region but often centres on cold, easily transportable dishes for picnics and beach gatherings: cold pasta salads, porchetta (herb-stuffed roast pork) sliced into sandwiches, frittata, and watermelon to cool the August heat. In Rome, the traditional dish is pollo con i peperoni — chicken braised with bell peppers — supposedly served on the evening before the Palio by the winning Sienese contrada. Grilled fish and seafood dominate coastal feasts.
