📜 History & Origins

International Workers' Day traces to the May 1, 1886, general strike in Chicago for the eight-hour workday and the subsequent Haymarket affair, which inspired the Second International in 1889 to designate May 1 as an annual day of labour solidarity. Italy held its first May Day celebrations that same year. Following the founding of the Italian Republic, Law 260 of 1947 formally established May 1 as a paid national public holiday — the first national law passed by the new republican Parliament.

The Concerto del Primo Maggio, staged annually in Rome's Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano since 1990, is the largest free concert in Italy, broadcast on television and drawing crowds of over 500,000. The three major trade union confederations (CGIL, CISL, and UIL) lead marches in major cities, often joined by political parties and social movements. Many Italians treat the day as the unofficial start of the spring outing season, organizing picnics, countryside walks, and beach trips if the weather is warm.

Labour Day picnics are a beloved tradition, with families packing frittata di maccheroni (pasta omelette), salumi (cured meats such as prosciutto and salami), pecorino and parmigiano cheeses, and crusty bread. Seasonal fava beans eaten raw with pecorino romano are a classic Roman May Day snack. Gelato and artisan pastries from local bakeries round out the day's fare.
