Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日, Kenpo Kinenbi) on May 3rd commemorates the promulgation of the post-war Japanese Constitution, which came into effect on May 3, 1947. The constitution, sometimes called the 'Peace Constitution,' is most famous for Article 9, in which Japan renounces war and the maintenance of armed forces with war potential. The holiday falls within Golden Week, creating a cluster of consecutive days off. The National Diet Building in Tokyo occasionally opens to the public for special tours on this day. Some civic groups hold lectures and symposiums about constitutional issues, and the day often features media coverage and polling about constitutional revision — a perennial topic in Japanese politics. Government offices and schools close. For the vast majority of Japanese, this day is enjoyed as part of the Golden Week vacation rather than as a day of constitutional reflection. In 2026, May 3rd falls on a Sunday, so the following Monday (May 4th, Greenery Day) will become an additional substitute holiday day-off for Constitution Memorial Day.
