National Foundation Day — holiday, Japan (February 11, 2026)

National Foundation Day Description

National Foundation Day (建国記念の日, Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) on February 11th commemorates the legendary accession of Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor, to the throne in 660 BCE according to the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). The date was established as Kigensetsu in 1872 during the Meiji era and was re-established under its current name in 1966 after being abolished during the post-war occupation. Unlike many other Japanese holidays, it is a subdued and often politically sensitive observance. The national flag is displayed prominently at government buildings, but large public celebrations are rare. Some shrines associated with Emperor Jimmu, notably Kashihara Jingu in Nara Prefecture (said to be the site of Jimmu's enthronement), hold ceremonies and attract visitors. Patriotic organizations may hold small gatherings. Government offices and schools close. Most businesses, shops, and restaurants remain open as normal. Public transport operates on weekday schedules. For most Japanese, it is a quiet day off without strong cultural or family traditions attached — a notable contrast to holidays like New Year's Day or Obon.
