Memorial Day Description
Memorial Day (현충일, Hyeonchungil) on June 6th honors the soldiers and patriots who died in service to South Korea, particularly those lost during the Korean War. A national remembrance ceremony is held at the Seoul National Cemetery, presided over by the President, with a nationwide siren sounding at 10:00 AM for one minute of silent prayer. The Korean flag is flown at half-mast nationwide. Government offices, banks, post offices, schools, and many businesses close. It is a solemn day — loud entertainment and festive activities are considered inappropriate. Many families visit national cemeteries and war memorials to pay respects. Television and radio stations broadcast special documentaries and war films. The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul holds special exhibitions and ceremonies. Mountain hiking trails near war memorial sites see increased visitors. Public transport operates on a holiday schedule, with some routes adding services to the National Cemetery. Restaurants and cafes in urban areas generally remain open, though operating hours may be reduced.
