Deepavali Description
The Hindu Festival of Lights celebrating the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. On Deepavali morning, Hindu families rise early for oil baths, don new traditional clothing (sarees for women, kurta for men), and visit temples for special prayers. Homes are illuminated with clay oil lamps (diyas) and elaborate kolam (colored rice flour designs) decorate doorsteps. The open house tradition extends to Hindu homes, where guests enjoy murukku, ladoo, and other Indian sweets alongside savory dishes like banana leaf rice feasts. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In neighborhoods like Brickfields (Little India) in Kuala Lumpur, the streets come alive with lights, bazaars, and cultural performances in the weeks leading up to the holiday.
