Islamic New Year Description
Awal Muharram marks the first day of the Islamic Hijri calendar, commemorating Prophet Muhammad's migration (hijrah) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. In Malaysia, the holiday is observed with special prayers and religious lectures (ceramah) at mosques nationwide. Many Muslims hold doa selamat (prayers for well-being) and engage in self-reflection on personal and community renewal for the coming year. In some states, processions and night-time religious gatherings take place. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The theme of hijrah — both the physical journey of the Prophet and the spiritual journey of self-improvement — is emphasized in mosque sermons and public media throughout the day.
