Malaysia Day Description
Commemorates the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963, when Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (which later separated in 1965) joined the Federation of Malaya. Since 2010, it has been a national public holiday celebrated with equal status to Merdeka Day. In East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), parades and cultural shows highlight indigenous Kadazan-Dusun, Iban, Bidayuh, and other native traditions alongside national unity themes. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close nationwide. The holiday emphasizes the unity of Peninsular Malaysia with Borneo states and has grown in significance as a symbol of the country's complete formation and federal identity.
