National Day (Merdeka Day) Description
The most important patriotic holiday, commemorating Malaya's independence from British colonial rule on August 31, 1957. The centerpiece is the grand Merdeka Parade at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur (or rotating state capitals), featuring military displays, cultural performances, and floats representing each state — broadcast live nationwide. Malaysians wave the Jalur Gemilang (national flag) from cars, buildings, and homes. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Throughout August, known as Bulan Merdeka (Independence Month), buildings are illuminated and competitions, school events, and patriotic song performances build toward the day's climax. The cry of 'Merdeka!' echoes as a reminder of the moment Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence.
