Boxing Day Description
Observed on December 26, continuing the Christmas festivities as a public holiday inherited from British colonial tradition. In Nigeria, the day is characterized by extended family gatherings, community parties, and the continuation of Christmas feasting. Boxing Day football matches (both viewing on television and neighborhood matches) are a strong tradition. In southeastern towns and villages, masquerade festivals (mmanwu in Igbo culture) reach their peak, with elaborately costumed figures performing dances and rituals through streets. Government offices, banks, and most businesses remain closed. The day also serves as a time for giving — extending Boxing Day's historical connection to charity — with many Nigerians visiting orphanages, hospitals, or distributing food to the less fortunate. For many, it is the final major celebration before the new year approaches.
