Christmas Day Description
Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas is one of Nigeria's most festive and widely anticipated holidays. Churches hold Christmas Eve candlelight services and Christmas morning celebrations with vibrant worship, nativity plays, and carols in English and local languages including Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and many others. Families prepare elaborate feasts centered on jollof rice, fried rice, chicken, goat meat, and chin-chin, with the famous Nigerian 'Christmas rice' often cooked in massive quantities. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The tradition of traveling to one's ancestral village (particularly in Igbo and Yoruba cultures) creates massive population movements in the days before Christmas. Streets are alive with masquerade performances in southeastern communities, while firecrackers and music fill neighborhoods. Christmas in Nigeria is a season of extravagant hospitality — it is almost impossible to visit a home without being offered food and drink.
