Good Friday Description
A solemn Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, widely observed across Nigeria's predominantly Christian southern states and Christian communities in the north. Churches hold special services featuring passion plays, sermons on the Seven Last Words of Christ, and hymns reflecting on the sacrifice of the cross. Many Christians fast and attend three-hour services from noon to 3 PM, believed to be the hours Christ hung on the cross. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The holiday marks the beginning of the Easter weekend, and many Nigerians travel from cities to their hometowns to spend the extended weekend with family in a tradition known as 'going home for Easter.'
