Celebrating Nigeria's independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The national celebration features a grand parade at Eagle Square in Abuja, presided over by the President, with military processions, marching schoolchildren, and cultural troupes from all 36 states showcasing Nigeria's ethnic diversity. The green-white-green national flag is hoisted nationwide. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In state capitals, governors host parallel celebrations. For many Nigerians, the day is also one of reflection on the nation's achievements and challenges since independence, with media broadcasting documentaries on Nigerian history and patriotic programming.
