New Year's Day Description
The first day of the Gregorian calendar year, celebrated across all of Nigeria's diverse regions and communities. On New Year's Eve, churches hold Watchnight (Crossover) services with prayers, singing, and dancing that last into the early morning hours, while mosques offer prayers of thanksgiving. At midnight, fireworks and firecrackers erupt across cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Families gather for feasts featuring jollof rice, fried rice, chicken, and assorted meats. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The day sets a tone of optimism and renewal, with many Nigerians making resolutions and visiting relatives to exchange well-wishes for the year ahead.
