The 'Second Christmas Day' (Tweede Kerstdag) tradition, like the other two-day Dutch holidays, stems from the Christian liturgical octave and was preserved in Dutch civil law as a statutory day of rest. In the postwar decades it evolved from a purely domestic extension of Christmas into a day for social visits and, increasingly, for shopping, concerts, and short breaks — a quieter counterpart to the First Day that lets families split the holiday between two sets of relatives.
