Christmas Day Description
Christmas Day, or First Christmas Day in Dutch parlance, celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is one of the most important family holidays in the Netherlands. Most Dutch families gather for an elaborate "kerstdiner" featuring "gourmetten" (tabletop grilling) or fondue. Churches hold well-attended services, including candlelit midnight masses on Christmas Eve. All banks, government offices, and most retail businesses close. The holiday is distinctly family-oriented with gift exchanges and extended meals throughout the day.
