King's Day Description

King's Day celebrates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander and is the Netherlands' most vibrant national holiday. The entire country transforms into a sea of orange, with street markets ("vrijmarkt") where anyone may sell goods without a permit, especially in Amsterdam and Utrecht. Canals fill with decorated boats, open-air concerts ring out, and children's games animate every neighborhood. Public offices, banks, and most businesses close, though bars and restaurants operate at full capacity. The preceding night, King's Night, features club events and festivals.

📜 History & Origins

The holiday began in 1885 as 'Prinsessedag' (Princess Day), honoring the five-year-old Princess Wilhelmina, and was renamed 'Koninginnedag' (Queen's Day) when she became queen in 1890. The date followed successive queens' birthdays until 2013, when Willem-Alexander ascended the throne and moved the celebration to his own birthday, April 27, renaming it 'Koningsdag'. The free vrijmarkt street market dates to a 1981 exemption allowing unlicensed sales on that day, now a signature feature.

Oranjegekte (orange madness) sees the nation dress in the House of Orange-Nassau's color, painting faces, houses, and even streets. The vrijmarkt turns city centers into the world's largest yard sale, where anyone, especially children, sells toys, books, and snacks with no permit needed. Amsterdam's canals jam with orange-decorated boats, open-air concerts fill Museumplein and stages nationwide, and the King himself visits a chosen town to join games and greet citizens in a televised royal tour.

🍽️ Traditional Foods

The tompouce — a pink (or orange) layered cream pastry — is recolored orange and sold by the million on King's Day. Oranje bitter, a distilled orange liqueur, is poured for toasts to the royal house. Street stalls sell bitterballen (crispy meat ragout bites), raw herring with onion, and frikandel sandwiches, while 'oranje tompouce', orange cupcakes, and 'oranjekoek' (orange-iced spiced cake from Groningen) keep the color theme alive on every stall.
