Liberation Day — holiday, Netherlands (May 5, 2026)

Liberation Day Description

Liberation Day commemorates the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi German occupation in 1945. Under current legislation, it is an official paid day off only once every five years (next in 2025); in other years, it is observed voluntarily. Festivals called "Bevrijdingsfestivals" take place in all provinces, featuring concerts, debates, and food stalls. The day begins with the lighting of the Liberation Fire in Wageningen, where the German surrender was signed, and continues with celebrations nationwide promoting freedom and democracy.
