Whit Monday Description

Whit Monday is the second day of Pentecost and an official national public holiday. Banks, government offices, and schools close. Many Dutch people attend music festivals, the most prominent being the Pinkpop festival — one of Europe's longest-running outdoor pop festivals held in Landgraaf, Limburg. Others take short trips to the countryside or coast. Since Whit Monday always falls in late spring, it is a popular day for outdoor recreation, cycling, and boating on the country's extensive canals and lakes.

The second day of Pentecost, like Easter Monday, derives from the liturgical octave retained in Dutch civil law when many countries reduced Pentecost to a single day. Pinkpop, the festival most associated with Whit Monday, was first held in 1970 in Geleen as the Netherlands' first major pop festival and takes its name from 'Pinksteren' and 'pop'; it later moved to Landgraaf and is now the longest-running annual pop festival in the world, anchoring Whit Monday in the national cultural calendar.

Music defines the day: Pinkpop in Landgraaf draws tens of thousands over the long weekend, while smaller festivals such as Dauwpop in Haarlo and Liberation-deferred events fill the south.
