Ascension Day Description
Ascension Day commemorates Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven forty days after Easter and always falls on a Thursday. It is a public holiday in Norway with banks, government offices, and most businesses closed. Church services are held, though attendance is generally lower than at Easter or Christmas. Many Norwegians use this day to begin an extended weekend trip — particularly to summer cabins as the season transitions to warmer weather. Some retail stores and shopping centers may open, especially in larger cities. The day is less culturally prominent than Easter or Christmas but remains a valued spring break.
